John Haver - Provincial Coach North

John started rowing at the Saskatoon Rowing club in 1997 when he was 12 years old.  He was on the provincial rowing team from 1999-2002.  John was the “fill-in” Provincial Coach for the competitive season of 2003 when he was 19.  After 2003, John spent four years on the National team where he competed as a lightweight.  John competed at three U23 World Rowing Championships, he placed 3rd in 2004 and 2005 in the Lightweight Double and 9th in 2006 in the lightweight four.

In 2007, John competed in the Lightweight Double (5th) and the Lightweight Four (1st) at the Pan Am Games in Rio, Brazil.   John’s experience coaching has been molded largely from the coaches he has had/trained under in the past.  Rob Currie, Bob Haver, Chuck McDiarmid, Mike Spracklin, Patrick Newman, and Bent Jensen have all contributed to John’s coaching style and he draws on each experience to create his own coaching style/philosophy.

John’s role at the Saskatoon Rowing club is to coach Junior competitive rowing, including training and selection of provincial teams.  John also provides training and programs and technical feedback to the Senior and Master rowers. John (with the support of seasonal staff) organizes all away regattas and the Head of the South Saskatchewan in September.

Most recently, John was awarded Coach of the Year from both the Rowing Canada and SaskSport for 2015.
