Juniors

HIGH PERFORMANCE

Junior rowers are those athletes that are under 19 years as of December 31, 2014. The athletes are training with the intention of competing at Canada Summer Games in 2017

Historically, Saskatchewan performs exceptionally well at Canada Games, finishing 3rd or 4th overall, which is an incredible accomplishment given our population base. British Columbia and Ontario are traditional strengths due to their larger population bases but also their longer on-water seasons. Alberta and Quebec have larger rowing programs, but Saskatchewan is able to hold their own as a result of our impressive coaching capacity in the province.

Juniors in Saskatoon are coached by John Haver, Provincial Coach North for the Saskatchewan Rowing Association (SRA). John has been a rower the majority of his life and has represented Saskatchewan at Games and has earned medals for his country at World Championships. In Regina, Juniors are coached by Garett Mathiason, Head Provincial Coach for the SRA. Garett has rowed for Saskatchewan as well at Games and at the prestigious Henley in England. Garett and John work very closely together to encourage healthy competition between the Regina and Saskatoon clubs, but we are all Saskatchewan rowers at the end of the day and support each other.

Juniors row from 4pm to 6pm Monday to Friday and at 8:00am(subject to change) on Saturday mornings May to September. In May and June, there are optional 6am rows Tuesday and Thursdays. In competition season (July-August) and after school is out, they row Mon/Wed/Friday at 7am in addition to the daily 4pm rows.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Junior Development Program will provide young, talented, and tall athletes with an experience in sculling that begins with a focus on good technique at an early age. The goal of this program is to identify athletes with potential, early in their rowing careers and put them in an environment where they can learn and grow in the sport. This will better position them to understand the process of high performance.

Athletes will qualify if they are between 11 and 15 years of age and be a minimum of 5’ in height and have taken a Junior Learn To Row Program.

This program runs May to September, Tuesday and Thursdays at 4pm and Saturdays at 8am. Program cost is $385. (Costs of Learn to Row program are deducted from program costs). Athletes that are ready may compete in Regattas at the Coach’s discretion. Additional costs would apply.

There are dates that the program will not be running due to High Performance coach being away with the competitive athletes.  Coach will communicate these times directly to the rowers.
